It may be that a huge rock weighing billions of tons smashed into Mercury early in its history.  The collision might have blown off part of the planet's shell leaving just a thin mantle and crust. 

    Mercury has almost no atmosphere.  Floating above the surface is a tiny amount of sodium and potassium.
